Palazzo Tirso Cagliari MGallery
What won us over at Palazzo Tirso Cagliari MGallery is how fully a 1920s neoclassical...
Miramare occupies a building dating to 1775 on Cagliari's waterfront, and the hotel takes its "Museo" nickname seriously: an on-site art gallery spills out into the stairwells and hallways, where sculpture and paintings line the walls instead of the generic prints most hotels settle for. Chandeliers, patterned rugs and a fireplace in the reception set an eclectic, almost theatrical tone from the moment guests walk in. It's a small property — eighteen rooms over two floors — and that scale is part of what lets the eccentricity feel considered rather than cluttered, each landing offering something different to look at rather than repeating a single decorative idea floor after floor, a rare thing in a city where most historic conversions default to the same restrained palette.
We chose Miramare for refusing to play it safe: most historic hotels restore a building and then furnish it in tasteful neutrals, but this one fills every available wall with art and lets the decoration do the talking. It won't suit every traveller, and that's rather the point — it's a hotel with a point of view, run by people clearly more interested in curating an experience than following a template, and in a city with plenty of competent but interchangeable mid-range hotels, that distinction matters more than another neutral-toned lobby ever could.
The hotel sits in the Marina district, about five minutes' walk from the Port of Cagliari and close enough to Piazza Yenne, the cathedral and the railway station to reach all of them on foot. It's a dense, lived-in part of the old town rather than a quiet residential pocket, with restaurants, bars and the harbourfront promenade a short stroll away in any direction, and the harbour itself close enough that a handful of rooms look straight out over it, especially useful for travellers arriving by ferry rather than by air.

Where most hotels hang a few pieces as decoration, Miramare treats the art as the point: sculptures occupy landings, paintings crowd the corridors, and pieces are even available for sale, turning a walk to breakfast into something closer to a small gallery visit. It's a deliberate choice that rewards guests who enjoy looking as much as staying, and it gives even the smaller rooms a sense of occasion that square footage alone wouldn't provide, particularly in the Junior Suite, where the scale finally matches the ambition of the decor and the harbour view completes the effect.
Access involves stairs and the building's historic layout is not the easiest for large luggage, and a few guests have found the soundproofing between rooms less than perfect, so light sleepers may want to ask for a quieter floor away from the lounge. For travellers drawn to a harbourfront address with genuine personality over a more conventional boutique polish, though, Miramare is one of the more memorable stays in Cagliari's old port district, and one that's hard to forget once you've walked its stairwells and taken in everything hanging on them.
