Palazzo Tirso Cagliari MGallery
What won us over at Palazzo Tirso Cagliari MGallery is how fully a 1920s neoclassical...
Cross the road from La Villa del Mare and you're on the sand of Poetto, Cagliari's long seafront beach, and the hotel's whole design reads like a response to that fact. The lobby runs to faded blue wooden floors and white furniture, with black-and-white photographs of the striped beach huts that once lined this shore hung where a chain hotel would put abstract art. Seashells turn up in corners that don't call attention to themselves, and nothing about the place feels bought to match a brand guideline. It's a small, nine-room villa with the easy, sun-bleached feel of a house that has belonged to the beach for longer than it's belonged to guests, and that history is part of what we came here to find.
We chose this address for the specificity of its theme: nothing here is generic coastal decor bought in bulk. Seashells turn up in unexpected corners, coral patterns run through the bedding, and the breakfast room borrows its colour palette from Poetto's old beach huts rather than a stock photo of the Mediterranean. It's an inexpensive hotel that has put its money into atmosphere rather than marble, and the atmosphere is the reason to book it rather than one of the larger resorts further down the seafront.
Poetto beach is across the street, with its bars, gelato stands and beach clubs within easy walking distance, and downtown Cagliari — the old town, the Roman amphitheatre, the harbour — is about ten minutes away by car or bus. The airport sits roughly 25 minutes off. It's a location built for a different rhythm than a city-centre stay: mornings on the sand, a walk along the Poetto promenade at golden hour, evenings wandering into town for dinner, rather than the other way round.
Prix: €
Vibe: nostalgic, sea-themed, laid-back
Chambres: 9, some with sea-view balconies, others opening onto the garden; apartment-style rooms with kitchens available
Best For: couples, beach-first travellers, longer stays that want a kitchen
Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: the black-and-white photographs of old Poetto scattered through the lobby
Dining: breakfast included, served with Italian coffee in a room with wraparound windows
Amenities: garden with loungers, wicker-furnished patio, sea-view rooms, kitchenette options
Attractions: Poetto beach across the street, Cagliari old town and harbour about ten minutes away
Rooms lean into the theme rather than away from it: coral-patterned bedding, ocean paintings, blue accent walls over wood floors. Bathrooms are compact and modern rather than grand, which suits a hotel that spends its budget on character instead of marble counters. The rooms that open onto a sea-view balcony are worth requesting directly — ask at booking rather than hoping for an upgrade on arrival — and the apartment-style units with a small kitchen make sense for anyone staying more than a couple of nights and planning to eat at least one dinner in rather than out every night.
There's no pool and no restaurant beyond breakfast, and parking isn't on site, so arriving by car means finding a spot nearby, which can take patience in high season. This suits travellers whose idea of a seaside stay is the actual sea, not a hotel pool substituting for it — anyone wanting a full-service resort with restaurants and spa treatments should look toward the harbour or the old town instead. For a beach-first couple of nights on Poetto, though, it's hard to find a more honest match between a hotel and its setting, and the price makes it an easy one to recommend without reservation, especially for a second or third trip back to this stretch of coast.
