Palazzo Tirso Cagliari MGallery
What won us over at Palazzo Tirso Cagliari MGallery is how fully a 1920s neoclassical...
Hotel Nautilus is built as three low villas set around a shared garden, barely twenty metres from the sand of Poetto beach, Cagliari's long seafront stretch. The style leans nautical — sea-toned walls, clean lines, nothing fussy — and the layout trades a single tower for a cluster of smaller buildings that keeps the scale intimate even with the hotel's pool, garden and beach access all on site. It reads as newer and more deliberately designed than most of the neighbourhood's older seafront guesthouses, without losing the easy, barefoot feel that a beach hotel needs, and the garden ties the three buildings together into something that feels more like a small estate than a hotel complex.
We chose Nautilus for the combination a beach hotel rarely offers all at once: a free pool for guests who want chlorine over salt, direct beach access with sunbeds and umbrellas, and a handful of rooms with their own private garden and jacuzzi for travellers who want the villa feeling of total privacy. The hotel also leans into its seafront setting rather than apologising for being a few minutes from the old town — free bicycles make the short ride along the coast an easy way to spend an afternoon, and the beach kiosk breakfast option turns a routine meal into part of the holiday.
Poetto beach is at the doorstep, with its bars, kiosks and the cycle path that runs the length of the shore. The flamingo colonies of the Molentargius wetland are a short ride away, reachable on one of the hotel's free bicycles, and Cagliari's historic centre is about five to ten minutes by car. It's a location that works equally well for a lazy beach week or a base for day trips into the city, and the seafront promenade makes an early swim or a sunset walk part of the daily routine rather than an excursion.
Prix: €€
Vibe: nautical, villa-style, relaxed
Chambres: spread across three low-rise villas in a shared garden; several rooms have private gardens with their own jacuzzi
Best For: couples and groups of friends wanting resort amenities at villa scale
Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: breakfast served at a kiosk on the beach instead of indoors
Dining: breakfast on site or beachside; regional cuisine nearby at a neighbouring restaurant
Amenities: shared pool, hot tub, equipped beach, shared garden, free bicycles
Attractions: Poetto beach and cycle path at the door, Molentargius flamingo wetlands nearby, Cagliari old town about ten minutes by car
The rooms worth asking for are the ones with a private garden: step outside onto grass rather than a balcony, with a jacuzzi tucked into the corner for an evening that doesn't require leaving the room at all. Everyone else gets the shared pool and garden, which does a fair job of the same thing at a lower price. Sky TV, air conditioning and minibars keep the practical side covered without distracting from the point of the stay, which is the beach outside the door. The hot tub in the relaxation area carries a small supplement, and it's worth booking ahead on busy weekends when it tends to fill up quickly.
This is a resort-style stay built around the beach and pool rather than a city hotel with a view of one: travellers set on walking to every sight in the old town may prefer a base closer in. The hot tub and some garden rooms carry a supplement, so it's worth checking what's included before arriving, and pets aren't welcome here. For a few days of sea, sun and short bike rides to the flamingos, though, Nautilus does exactly what it sets out to do, and the low-rise villa layout keeps it from ever feeling crowded even in peak season.
