Palazzo Tirso Cagliari MGallery
What won us over at Palazzo Tirso Cagliari MGallery is how fully a 1920s neoclassical...
Palazzo Doglio sits inside a restored historic building in the heart of Cagliari's old town, the kind of address that could easily have become a museum instead of a hotel. The restoration kept the bones — tall windows that flood the 72 rooms and suites with natural light, the scale and proportion of a grand townhouse — and layered in Carrara marble, courtyards and a theatre built for events rather than storage. It's a five-star hotel that reads as a piece of the city it sits in, not a box dropped into it, and the courtyard at its centre, simply called The Court, does more to set the tone than any single room could.
We chose Palazzo Doglio for the range it covers without feeling scattered: a full wellness floor, five distinct places to eat or drink, meeting rooms and a private theatre, all inside one historic shell. Few hotels in Cagliari can offer a guest a massage, a Japanese-Brazilian dinner and a courtyard aperitivo without ever leaving the building, and the palazzo's scale — large enough for all of that, small enough to still feel considered — is what makes it work. It's the kind of hotel that rewards a longer stay rather than a single overnight.
Vico del Logudoro sits inside Cagliari's historic centre, within walking distance of the Bastione di Saint Remy, the cathedral and the old town's shopping streets, and close enough to the harbour for an evening stroll along the water. Poetto beach is a short drive rather than a walk, which suits travellers prioritising the city over the sand, and the old town's restaurants and bars are reachable on foot after dark, making a car largely unnecessary for anyone staying put in Cagliari.
Prix: €€€€
Vibe: grand palazzo, design-led, urban wellness
Chambres: 72 rooms and suites, from around 25 m² up to a 60 m² Executive Suite
Best For: couples and travellers who want a full spa and dining programme inside a historic building
Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: five separate restaurants and bars under one historic roof, from an Italian osteria to a Japanese-Brazilian table
Dining: Osteria del Forte (Sardinian classics), Saudade (Japanese-Brazilian), Maiori (courtyard pizzeria), Colonial (tapas and grill), plus an American-style bar
Amenities: Doglio Club spa with indoor pool, sauna and hot tub, Natura Bissé treatments, private theatre, meeting rooms, private parking
Attractions: old town landmarks on foot, harbour a short walk, Poetto beach a short drive
The spa, branded the Doglio Club, runs to an indoor pool, sauna, hot tub and treatment rooms built around a Natura Bissé skincare line — the kind of programme usually reserved for resorts rather than city hotels. Dinner options swing just as widely: Osteria del Forte keeps to Sardinian classics under Executive Chef Alessandro Cocco, Saudade crosses Japanese technique with Brazilian flavour, and Maiori serves pizza in the courtyard for an evening that doesn't call for formality, while Colonial leans toward tapas and grilled dishes for something in between. It means a multi-night stay never has to repeat itself, and a guest could plausibly eat somewhere different inside the hotel every evening of a week-long trip.
This is a city hotel built for guests who want the old town outside the door, not the beach: Poetto is a short drive rather than a stroll, so sun-first travellers may prefer a seafront address instead. The scale that makes the hotel so complete also makes it busier than a small boutique property, with events and meetings sharing the building on some weeks. For anyone prioritising architecture, spa time and a serious choice of restaurants over sand, though, Palazzo Doglio is as complete as Cagliari gets.
